Ben Evans: Mindfulness and Movement

Posted by on

At Oriya Organics, we sometimes come across everyday people who are doing extraordinary things with their lives and their actions and life decisions can be used as inspiration for us all. We want to highlight some of these individuals along with their stories to order to shine a light on the Everyday Heroes living all around us.

Ben Evans trains and competes in 100 mile races known as ultra-marathons.  Over the course of 2018, Ben logged over 3,000 miles run and he competed in two 100 mile competitions – all of this while working full-time at Whole Foods Market in Austin, TX and balancing his personal life at home.

Ben’s passion for running began in 2012. “I was living in Hawaii and the thought just hit me that I hadn’t run in a really long time, so I went inside and dug out some running shoes and just ran to the end of the block and back. I felt like I was gonna die, but just decided to get up the next morning and do it again. I’ve done it almost every day since.”

Eventually, this consistent dedication to running grew. Now, instead of running to the end of the block, Ben competes in ultra-marathons. “I did my first ultra back in 2016 and I’ve been doing them ever since.”

His approach to running is meditative. His morning ritual involves being out running by 5:00 am most days. “It’s just so quiet, so peaceful, with hardly anybody around. It’s one of my favorite feelings in the world being on my run as the sun comes up. I love seeing the sun rise and the city and wildlife just coming to life. I don’t really listen to music while I run. Most of the time I just listen to that metronome-like sound of your feet hitting the ground. It can be hypnotic.”

Ben is an all or nothing type of guy and this is the type of mindset he takes into his training and life approach.  “For me, it was all about making the conscious decision to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. No one can put on the running shoes for you and actually put in the work.  It is a personal decision that starts – and ends - with you.”

We will be hosting running tips, recipes and giveaways this month with some of Ben’s advice in mind: “a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and only you can make the decision - to move forward – and take that first step.”  Let’s move forward together as a family and take that first step now. #TakeTheStep #OriyaFamily
